Hooked

Got little surgical hooks on my teeth today to hold the rubber bands! My dad (who is now a plastic surgeon but trained briefly in orthodontics) warned me this was going to be a painful process, as they had to install interdental wires to sustain the hooks.  So I gulped down some tylenol and braced myself, but it turns out that in modern orthodontics, the intrusive wires are no longer necessary-- the brackets are sufficient to hold the hooks and rubber bands.  Phew!  It was actually a relatively painless process, though the lady twisting the wires tugged at my teeth and poked my lips.  I observed her wire-twisting prowess through a small mirror, and told her she must be fantastic at arts and crafts!
